My Plan
Things are stressed when it comes to the state and county budgets right now, not to mention the changes we are facing at the federal level, so being able to pivot priorities and adapt and overcome will be a necessity over the next four years.
While I have a few ideas that I would love to work on for the community,
These are the top three that I feel would have the largest and most positive impact on our community.
My Platform
1. Communications - I want to bring our city newsletter to a level with other progressive cities around the nation and offer the city newsletter online in both English and Spanish versions as well as in hard copy form via an "opt in" option.
Some residents haven't had a newsletter delivered to their mailbox in two or more years. This is a waste of tax money and paper. However, by allowing community businesses to advertise, we can break out of the "bulk drop" mail option that is quite hit or miss with a lot of residents and instead, generate money to not only expand the newsletter to include upcoming events and other community information outside of city hall business, but deliver the hard copy version only to those in the city who actually want it.
2. Public Safety/Social Services - There is a national shortage of police officers, so it is vitally important that we make sure our officers are paid fairly and competitively, that morale is high, and their desire to stay in Mount Rainier is strong.
A good community police force is one that is consistent. This allows for the community to get to know their officers and the officers to get to know us...their community.
We also need to stand strong with our Mount Rainier Volunteer Fire Department.
As we saw this past summer, it doesn't take much to lose what we take for granted with
our career fire/EMS staff.
The only way to truly protect ourselves is to make sure our volunteers are supported as it is laid out in the city charter. This will allow them to recruit and retain members so they can respond to our emergencies when our career crews are unable to.
With over 20 years of work in public safety, I know the importance of shoring up our city for when an emergency happens. We need to make sure that we not only have a solid EOP (Emergency Operations Plan), but a COOP (Continuation of Operations Plan), and COG (Continuity of Government) plan as well. You only need to look at Western North Carolina to see why it is important to be prepared. I fully intend on including our CERT (Community Emergency Response Team), local businesses, and other interested residents in the process as recommended by FEMA.
3. Expand City Council - I'd like to add apartment and youth liaisons in
non-legislative roles to the council.
In a city where 70% of our residents live in apartments, we need to build a bridge so that ALL residents know they have a place at the table when it comes to their city, and that includes the youth. They can vote in our city, so we should also give them a voice.
By doing this, not only can we address needs and concerns we may not otherwise see, but this can also contribute to the building of our next generation of political leaders.
I do have other ideas that I would love to talk about with residents.

4. Economic Development Advisory Committee - I've written the premise for the creation of a Committee who will be charged to finding and utilizing current economic trends and opportunities to foster a thriving community where economic vitality and community well-being intersect. To drive innovative solutions and sustainable growth through collaboration and strategic planning, the committee will strive to enhance the prosperity and quality of life for all residents ensuring Mount Rainier as a vibrant and dynamic community now and into the future.
